WorldMozaic - 'Panda Grandma' Celebrates 35th Birthday

The Chongqing zoo in China held a 35th anniversary celebration for the 'panda grandmother' named Xingxing. Born in 1982, she is one of the world's oldest giant pandas.

Xingxing is the mother of a large family consisted of 90 pandas. Her children and grandchildren are scattered in different parts of the world, in 20 countries and regions, including the US, Canada and Japan.

On Saturday (09/16/2017), Xinxing celebrated eating bamboo shoots and apples in his large cage at the Chongqing Zoo. The song 'Happy Birthday' was played while she ate.

Her grandchildren in several zoos such as in Hong Kong, Toronto and Memphis use technology to send birthday wishes through video shows.

At the Chongqing Zoo, the 'panda grandmother' does not live alone. She was accompanied by one son, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Xinxing was first taken to the zoo when she was one year old. She first gave birth in 1992.

In 2002, Xinxing broke the record as the oldest panda who gave birth. At the age of 20, she gave birth to twins.

Xinxing's caregiver, Yin Yanqiang, said Xinxing at the age of 35 is still fresh and has not shown the problem of aging.

Xinxing body weight is currently recorded at 94 kilograms. She ate bamboo shoots as much as 15 pounds and 1 kilogram of bamboo leaves on average as well as many fruits. She also eat grounded meals three times a day, Yin said.

The zoo manager has specifically provided pure drinking water and monthly physical checks for Xinxing to make Xinxing live a good old age, Yin added.

Panda is known to have a short life span. In the wild, pandas usually live for 15 to 20 years. While in captivity, they can live up to about 30 years, which is considered equivalent to 90 years of human age.

According to the State Forestry Agency of China, by 2013, pandas living in the wild are less than 2,000. Most of them roam the mountainous areas of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, whereas around 400 others live in captivity.

Earlier last week, the oldest panda named Basi who lived in captivity died at the age of 37 years. Baji is the model for Pan Pan, Beijing Asian Games mascot of 1990.
