WorldMozaic - Hurricane Maria Grew Stronger Potentially Becomes Disaster

Hurricane Maria grew stronger and potentially  became a  catastrophic category five disaster as it approached Dominica Republlic in the Eastern Caribbean, the US Hurricane Center said on Monday (9/18/2017) local time.

The hurricane Maria's center is located approximately 25 kilometers east-southeast of Dominica and 70 kilometers off the coast of Martinique in the eastern Caribbean Sea.

The storm is moving toward west-northwest with speed of 15 kilometers per hour with maximum wind power of 260 kilometers per hour and a stronger blowout, the US storm research agency said.

Maria became a category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Five-Level Scale, and is the fourth most powerful storm in the Atlantic Ocean this year.

Tropical cyclone and hurricane warnings are issued, and surveillance is made for a group of islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea.

The core of Maria is expected to move closer to the nearby Dominican and Leeward Islands. The storm is also expected to pass through the northeastern Caribbean Sea late Monday and Tuesday before approaching Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The Hurricane is expected to raise the sea level as high as 1.5 to 2.1 meters above normal in the storm warning area.

Hurricane Maria is expected to hit vulnerable and still recovering island region from the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in early September 2017, which is one of the most powerful storms in the Atlantic ocean record.

Hurricane Irma killed no less than 81 people in the Caribbean and southern United States.
