More than 3,000 immigrants were rescued by the Libyan coast guard. Thousands of immigrants tried to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe within the last week while Italy rescued about 2,000 immigrants, according to a number of officials and local media on Sunday (17/09/2017).

Although the number of immigrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean has dropped dramatically in recent months, recent rescue operations indicate the path is still flooded with asylum seekers.

It is reported that the number is the largest number of immigrants saved by Libya within a week since mid-July when the number of asylum-seekers attempting to enter Europe dropped dramatically.

Six years since the revolution and NATO military intervention that led to the overthrow of Moamer Kadhafi, Libya became the main gateway for immigrants to go to Europe while Italy at the forefront of Europe bore the worst impact of the immigrant crisis.

Most rescue operations in Libyan waters were conducted offshore Zawiya and Sabratha towns, Libyan naval spokesman, General Ayoub Kacem said.

He added that the Libyan coast guard managed to rescue 2,082 immigrants in nine operations from Monday to Friday and a woman died, while on Saturday as many as 1,047 asylum seekers were rescued.

Italy, the main and most immediate destination of immigrants, houses 6,500 asylum seekers since mid-July, about 15 percent of the total over the same period in the last three years.
