France began to increase security to the Eiffel Tower as one of the anti-terrorism measures it had, the Paris city hall said. It will began with the installation of bulletproof glass walls around the popular monument.

The measures follows a series of extremist attacks in the French capital over the past two years, killing more than 200 people.

The bulletproof glass wall will cost 30 million euros which will take nine months to complete, Paris tourism chief Jean-Francois Martins told.

Visited by six to seven million people per year, the monument has been patrolled permanently.

However, Paris council members in March agreed to increase security due to "high terrorist threat".

Last month a 19-year-old former psychiatric patient jumped over a security barrier in the tower with a knife, saying he wanted to attack a soldier.

Some 7,000 troops have been deployed under anti-terrorism operations known as Sentinelle, patrolling the streets and guarding tourist spots, since the jihad attacks in the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in January 2015.

Martins said the renovation "will not interfere with visitor arrivals" and tourists can still walk to the tower for free, after passing security checks.
