WorldMozaic - China Support Myanmar Related to Rohingya

China supports the efforts of the Government of Myanmar to protect the security of its country and opposes the recent attacks in Rakhine state, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres.

The military response to the attack in western Myanmar last month left more than 410,000 Rohingyas fleeing to the neighboring country Bangladesh, and was declared by the UN as a tribal cleansing.

The Myanmar government says about 400 people were killed in the fighting.

Britain, France and Australia on Monday urged Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi to end military violence against Rohingya.

State security adviser of Suu Kyi said the escapee could return to Myanmar, but the rules should be discussed first.

Wang told Guterres at a meeting at the United Nations that China "understood and supported" Myanmar's efforts to protect security in Rakhine and hoped that the conflict could be resolved soon, China's foreign ministry said Tuesday (19/09/2017).

China expresses its sympathy to those who have fled to Bangladesh and will send humanitarian aid to Bangladesh, Wang said..

"China is urging Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the issue through dialogue and consultation," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

In addition, he said, "China is willing to continue promoting peace talks in its own way, and hopes the international community can play a constructive role to defuse the situation and promote dialogue," he said.

China and Myanmar have close economic and diplomatic ties, but China has denied estimates that democratization in the former Burma has led to weaker ties between the two countries.
