Bangladesh Limits Rohingya Refugee Movement

WorldMozaic - Bangladesh Limits Rohingya Refugee Movement

Bangladesh authorities have begun to limit the movement of Rohingya refugees, by forbidding them to leave the designated area of the country, which houses more than 400 thousand people who have fled the violence in Myanmar.

As Dhaka fought an unprecedented 'crisis' scale, dozens of refugees were found in three towns hundreds of kilometers off the Myanmar border, sparking fears that thousands of Rohingya Muslims will move from border to Bangladesh.

Police say they are currently issuing orders that ban Rohingya refugees from leaving government-appointed areas and camps for them in the border district.

"They have to stay in the designated camp until they return to their country," Sahely Ferdous, a police spokesman, said in a statement.

He said that Rohingyas were also asked not to stay at a friend's house or acquaintances, whereas local residents had been asked not to rent homes for refugees.

"They should not travel from one place to another through streets, trains or waterways," the order said, adding that bus drivers and trucks and workers had been asked not to bring Rohingya refugees.
