Tunisia Allow Women to Marry Non-Muslim Men

WorldMozaic - Tunisia Allow Women to Marry Non-Muslim Men

Tunisia removes a ban on Muslim women to marry non-Muslim men who have been in effect for decades.

"Congratulations to Tunisian women for the right to freely choose their husband," said Garrach's presidential spokesman on Facebook.

The announcement came a month after President Beji Caid Essebsi called on his government to abolish the ban imposed since 1973.

Previously non-Muslim men who wanted to marry Tunisian women should converts to moslem and submit a certificate of the conversion as evidence.

A number of human rights groups in the North African country are campaigning for the abolition of the ban, saying it undermines the human right of choosing a spouse.

Tunisia is seen as the leader of the Arab countries regarding women's rights, however there is still discrimination especially in the case of inheritance.

Congratulations to the women and men of Tunisia.
