WorldMozaic - Sri Lanka Opens Marijuana Plantation for export to the US & other countries.
The first marijuana plant will be inaugurated in Sri Lanka to supply traditional Sri Lanka's drugs market and some export to the US.
Sri Lanka's Health Minister, Rajitha Senaratne, said that the 40-hectare marijuana plantation, which can produce more than 25 tonnes of marijuana a year and is under military protection, will ensure high quality marijuana supplies.
"Many traditional medicine practitioners complain that they have difficulty obtaining high quality marijuana," Senaratne told media crews.
"Quality marijuana is an important ingredient in the compounding of traditional medicine".
He said the traditional drug market is currently relying on confiscated marijuana.
"When traditional medicine practitioners get marijuana, the cannabis is already four to five years old and loses its usefulness," Senaratne said.
He said the Sri Lankan government plans to export a surplus from the marijuana platation in Ingiriya, 60 kilometers southeast of Colombo.
"I hear the demand from the US market and some other countries is very high," he said. "Cannabis is used by the pharmaceutical industry in the manufacture of painkillers."
However, it should be noted that the possession of marijuana and its use as cigarettes is considered illegal in Sri Lanka.
