Basi, the oldest Panda in the world in captivity died at the age of 37 years or equivalent to more thana century in human age, said the panda keeper in China on Thursday.

Basi lives nearly two decades longer than other pandas in the wild that average life span of about 20 years, but pandas in captivity generally live longer.

Basi became a favorite star in China and her birthday is often celebrated royally.

The state television station on Thursday broadcasted a Basi funeral ceremony at a zoo in southeastern China.

"With a heavy heart, we announce today the original models of 'Panpan', the first Asian Games mascot (in China in 1990), and the friendship angels both at home and abroad, Basi the giant panda passed away on 08.50, 13 September 2017, at 37 years old, "the Straits Giant Panda Research and Exchange Center in Fuzhou.



Basi has been living in the zoo since being rescued from the wild after he fell into a river in the southwestern region of China when he was about four or five years old. He was named Basi as the name of the valley where he was found.

Basi had lived abroad when he was loaned to the San Diego Zoo for six months in 1987.

Giant Panda reproduction rate is very low. The condition, along with loss of habitat, is the major contributor to making it included in the Red List of vulnerable species threatened with extinction according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN).

The black and white bear, which symbolizes the protection of wildlife worldwide, has been already classified as an endangered species.
