WorldMozaic - Egypt Reinforces Life Sentence for Moursi

Egypt's high court on Saturday (16/09/2017) upheld a lifetime prison sentence against ousted president Mohamed Moursi, according to his lawyer and court officials.

The cassation court confirmed the life sentence first imposed in June 2016 for charges of leading illegal groups but they withdrew the 15-year sentence for allegedly stealing classified documents, Moursi's lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsud mentioned.

Life imprisonment in Egypt is for 25 years, and the high court's verdict can not be appealed.

Moursi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, was overthrowed by the military in July 2013 following mass protests against his government.

The court also confirmed the death penalty for documentary producer Ahmed Ali Abdo, cabin crew member EgyptAir Mohamed Adel Kilani and assistant university lecturer Ahmed Ismail Thabet and a life imprisonment and 15 years for two others according to court officials.

The sentences were based on the fact that the defendants handed over the country secrets to Qatar, an ally of Moursi's government who condemned his overthrow. Qatar denied the allegations.

Qatar is still facing a diplomatic crisis due to the severance of relations made by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates Arab, partly because it accused the small country of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

Moursi, who came to power after a 2011 uprising that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak, was elected president in 2012 and reigned for a year before being ousted.

His administration was protested and protesters demanded his resignation before the military toppled and detained him.

He separately has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a deadly clash between protesters and security forces overthrow his palace in December 2012.

One court reversed the death penalty in another trial on charges of escape from prison and violence in the 2011 revolution, which is still awaiting trial.

Following Moursi's overthrow, police cracked down on hundreds of protesters.

Since its overthrow, Egypt has fought against the insurgency of the ISIS-affiliated group in North Sinai.

The court has sentenced hundreds of Islamists to death, including Muslim Brotherhood leaders, despite many appeals and new trials.
