WorldMozaic - In China, People Can Withdraw Money Without ATM Card

A number of banks in China have just launched ATM machines equipped with face recognition technology to improve the customer experience.

Beijing News reported that machines launched by branches of China Construction Bank (CCB), Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) and China Merchants Bank (CMB) can identify, differentiate and authenticate users even if they are twins, using makeup, or perform light plactic surgery,  as long as mantain the shape of bone and eyebrow distance.

It only takes less than a minute to withdraw money from such ATM machines, and daily withdrawals for each user are limited to at least 3,000 yuan.

Regardless of the first step of security using facial recognition, customers also need to enter their ID number or phone number to verify the identity and password of the account to withdraw money.

According to CMB employees, there has been no problem since the service was launched. He added that the technology can find out if the account holder matches the user, and whether the person has the autorithy to withdraw or not.

"Face recognition technology has been applied to payment services for some time." Technology-based banks only offer it as an alternative service to enhance the customer experience, "said Dong Ximiao, senior researcher at Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China.

He added that more banks would tend to adopt the technology for their ATM machines in the future if the cost is reasonable and the technology is mature, however it also depends on customer needs.
